How to use it
Type an English word in the search box and pick a suggestion to see it in Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Korean and Chinese. Searching in Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Korean or Chinese opens the page for that language instead.
If a word isn’t listed yet, you can request it. The most requested words are added first.
Notation
- Japanese: the word as usually written (kanji or kana), its reading in hiragana, and Hepburn romanization with long vowels marked (ō, ū).
- Chinese: Standard Mandarin. Simplified characters are shown first, with traditional characters and pinyin with tone marks.
- Korean: Revised Romanization of Korean, the official system in South Korea. Sino-Korean words also show their hanja.
- French, Italian, Spanish, German: International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Spanish follows Castilian pronunciation; differences in Latin America are noted where relevant.
- Gender: French, Italian and Spanish nouns are masculine or feminine; German nouns are masculine, feminine or neuter. It changes the articles and adjectives that go with the word.
- Name check: we flag slang and unwanted meanings that are widely known. Regional slang is not fully covered, so check with a native speaker before using a word as a brand or product name.
Audio
The play button uses recordings made with speech synthesis (Google Cloud Text-to-Speech). Where no recording is available, your device’s built-in text-to-speech is used, which only works if your device has a voice for that language.
